Guillaume Apollinaire

Guillaume Apollinaire was a poet and art-critic.
His real name was Wilhelm Apollinaris Albertus Kostrowitsky born in Rome august 26 1880 as a bastard son of an aristocratic Polish mother and an Italian officer. He spent his youth in Monaco and the French southcoast. At school he said he was a Russian prince.

In 1914 Apollinaire enlists as corporal Gui.de Kostrowsky voluntarily in the French army. From the trenches he sends warpoems to his girlfrends in Paris. Some are by lack of paper written on bark of birchen.
